Strengthening support for migrant workers

Features | 22 November 2023

Migrant workers play an important role in our real estate operations, and we seek to deepen our efforts to build stronger connections with them. On 22 November, we hosted 40 beneficiaries from HealthServe for grocery shopping and lunch at West Mall. Each migrant worker was paired with a SingLand volunteer who assisted them with grocery purchases of $70 each at the mall and interacted with them over a hearty lunch at the mall’s F&B outlets. All expenses were sponsored by SingLand.

This engagement activity is part of SingLand Elevates, the Group’s wider social sustainability initiative that was launched in 2022 which seeks to build inclusive communities through support for underprivileged groups such as migrant workers. Through such efforts, we hope to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that helps migrant workers feel more at home.

“Corporates have a unique role to play in fostering meaningful community engagement, and for us, this means embracing a purpose beyond profit. We seek to be a force for good in the communities we serve. As a premier real estate developer, migrant workers are an integral part of our ecosystem and we are committed to working with our business and community partners to create a more supportive environment that improves their wellbeing. Through this initiative, we hope to show our appreciation for their contributions to Singapore and bring smiles to their faces.”

LONG-TERM SUPPORT FOR MIGRANT WORKERS

Last year, we formed a three-year partnership with HealthServe, a charity dedicated to providing medical, mental health care and social assistance to disadvantaged migrant workers in Singapore.  Through an annual donation of S$50,000, we hope to provide greater access to medical and dental care, mental health services, and social assistance for these workers, especially amidst the rising cost of living.

Dr Benjamin Kuan, Chief Executive Officer of HealthServe, said, “Our migrant workers’ holistic well-being and dignity lie at the heart of all that we do at HealthServe. Beyond the groceries purchased today, the respite and joy our migrant friends took away from the day’s engagement with SingLand’s volunteers is truly uplifting. We are grateful to our long-time partner SingLand for their generosity and commitment to serving the marginalised migrant worker community in Singapore and look forward to doing more, together.”

We are a long-term supporter of the migrant worker community and in addition to HealthServe, we have also worked with social enterprise SDI Academy and non-profit Covid-19 Migrant Support Coalition to positively impact the lives of migrant workers.

CREATING POSITIVE IMPACT THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM

As part of our 60th anniversary celebrations this year, we doubled down on our CSR efforts to give back to the wider community and support meaningful social causes. We supported various charities through donations, while our employees have also participated in a range of CSR activities such as a partnership with Central Singapore CDC’s Silver Homes programme to improve the living conditions of underprivileged elderly living in rental flats. With the conclusion of this activity with HealthServe, we have exceeded 1,000 volunteer hours this year, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to making a lasting and positive impact through SingLand Elevates.
